The paper entitled “Leadership and facilitation of Teachers Professional Learning Communities (LeaFaP)”, Liderazgo y facilitación de las Comunidades Profesionales de Aprendizaje de docentes (LeaFaP), authored by Elvira Barrios, Mónica Torres, and Carmen Sanchidrián , will be presented at the 1st International Conference on Education organized by the University Isabel I (Burgos, Spain) to be held on 24-25 April 2024. https://eventos.ui1.es/100597/detail/i-congreso-internacional-de-educacion-de-la-universidad-isabel-i.html.
This communication aims to raise awareness of the Erasmus project LeaFaP. This project focuses on the role of facilitators of PLC. The concept of facilitator, and who plays or could play this role, varies from one country to another so that, as in most European projects related to education, we must consider each educational system and school culture. In the case of Spain, given that initial teacher training is the responsibility of the Faculties of Education, while the Centros de Profesores are responsible for in-service training, we consider it essential to have two of these Centros (Málaga, and Marbella-Coín) involved in the project.
The starting premise is that student learning, the ultimate goal of all teacher’s professional development programmes, can be improved by improving professional development and, to this end, the PLC are an effective instrument as long as they encourage critical reflection by their members and achieve new learning that is transferred into innovative practices. Working on the training of PLC leaders and facilitators supports the work of PLC and thus the quality of collaborative work in schools.
Among the expected results are the design of online training modules for facilitators, the promotion of PLC practice in European schools, its dissemination in academic and professional contexts, raising awareness of different PLC and digital teaching profiles, connecting European institutions involved in the improvement of initial and in-service teacher training and, above all, contributing to school development and student learning success.
